Art of Arms

at Historic Equitation

Art of Arms is a Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) club based at Historic Equitation in Northamptonshire. Established in October 2025, we bring historical swordsmanship to life through practical training, technical instruction, and a shared enthusiasm for the martial traditions of the past.

Whether you're completely new to sword fighting or an experienced fencer looking to develop your skills, you're welcome to train with us.

What is HEMA?

Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) is the study and practice of historical fighting traditions, reconstructed through surviving manuals and other historical sources.

At Art of Arms, we explore martial traditions of England, Italy, and Germany by putting them into practice. Training combines historical techniques with modern coaching methods, helping students develop the skills, coordination, timing, and judgement needed to fence effectively.

It's an opportunity to learn a fascinating martial art, challenge yourself physically and mentally, and discover what it takes to wield a sword.

Train With Us

Our classes offer a welcoming environment for any adults interested in historical swordsmanship, from complete beginners to experienced martial artists. Equipment is provided for beginner classes, making it easy to get started. You don't need any previous fencing or martial arts experience to get started - just bring your curiosity and a willingness to learn!

We focus on developing sound fundamentals, effective technique, and the ability to apply the techniques of the past to actually fencing with a resisting opponent.

Please note classes are in an indoor equine arena - contact us if you have concerns about horse allergies.
