Coach Liz
Head Instructor | Art of Arms
Liz Scott is a historical fencer, strength and conditioning coach, and former orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon with a passion for bringing historical martial arts to life.
An active HEMA competitor, Liz has competed internationally in longsword, rapier, sabre, and armoured combat with experience in both historical and modern sport (epee) fencing. Her martial interests extend beyond the fencing salle to include jousting, mounted combat, and historical reenactment.
Liz's love of medieval and renaissance fencing began in 2006 when she joined a local reenactment group in the U.S.A.. Eventually finding HEMA, she coached and competed through both Boston Armizare and then Forge Fencing in Durham, NC before moving to the UK in 2025 to pursue an MSc at Loughborough University. She currently works as a strength & conditioning coach and personal trainer through Sprezzatura Sport Performance, in addition to coaching athletes in HEMA.
Her teaching combines an appreciation for historical sources with an understanding of biomechanics, athletic development, and modern coaching principles. She believes that effective swordsmanship requires more than memorising techniques: students must learn to move well, understand distance and timing, and develop the confidence to apply their skills under pressure.
Above all, Liz aims to make historical fencing accessible, challenging, and enjoyable for everyone who steps into the salle.
